I have been painting for over 25 years. I was always keen on drawing as a boy but never really concentrated on painting seriously until in my 40’s I joined the Gt.Yarmouth Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, where I remained a member for many years painting and contributing to the annual exhibitions and eventually becoming the chairman. I painted in watercolour as it seemed to be the perfect medium for portraying the wide, open landscape of the Norfolk countryside with its soft muted colours and big skies.
Along with a group of other artists we gained an award presented by Daler Rowney for the best art group 1998 which we brought back from the previous winners in South Africa. I have produced illustrations for a nationally distributed educational journal and was seconded to the East Anglian Water Co. to write and illustrate an education pack for schools. I have also done work for the National Trust.
After retiring from work my wife and I moved to Cyprus in 2002. There I had to learn how to deal with the hash light and the “busy” landscape of the Cyprus countryside and I find that the best medium for me was acrylic which allowed me to capture the strong colours and shadows of the bright sunlight. I found that the subjects for painting contained an eclectic mix of the old traditional Cyprus and the brasher, modern Cyprus and I have tried to show this in some of the pictures. This interests me as a subject, people going about their everyday tasks and trying to capture a fleeting moment. I exhibited my paintings in galleries in Paphos and took part in Open Studios.
Since returning to the UK I have joined the Henfield Art Club enjoying the company of the group members. I find the area around Henfield provides plenty of fine subjects to paint.
