Let me introduce myself, as an Artist/Educator for some 30 years. This is my first year, as part of the festival, moving to Henfield from Brighton, during the lockdown of December 2020.
Having studied for a BA in Fine Art in the early 1980s, where I focused on painting and post-graduate in digital arts 20 years later, I worked as an art lecturer in the London art colleges and then as a Community Artist on projects with local communities in Brighton and Hove. This transformed my own practice, as I forged a personal pathway to working in harmony with nature.
My experiences of the rolling hills, woodland and meadows of the South Downs, inspire work that goes beyond observation of physical walking scenes. My daily art walks translate what I see and feel, using whatever mix of media seems appropriate, including those from nature, where I gather, rub, boil, pound and scrape with apothecarial sensitivity and the tactile craft of creation.
So welcome to my part in this festival of all that is floral and natural. Visit my painted take on daily walks, seen in three venues over the weekend. Discover semi-abstract views and pathways through hills, streams and downland, or chance encounters into dense woodland lacery.
ASH HOUSE: This collection, entitled Meadowland focuses on grasses, seedheads and flora, against the stunning backdrop of the landscape outside. Browse whilst enjoying cold refreshments and homemade cake, for a small charity donation.
CORPUS CHRISTI CHURCH HALL: As well as refreshments, you can browse or purchase work, donated by some of my previous students on community projects, with 75% of funds going to the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund. The Image ‘Red Sky Over the Downs’ is one of these pieces.
On Sunday, 12th at 4pm, I will be providing a free demonstration on ‘Creating Texture with Pastel’ and you can also learn about my workshops and courses, soon to start in Henfield, where I teach traditional skills alongside the challenge to experiment.
GALLERY BN5 (also the Information Point): From May, into the festival weekend, where you can see a small collection entitled Woodland Intricacy.
I look forward to meeting you, where I can explain my work or watch me at play in my sketchbook.
