Sussex Waits was founded in 2013 to explore the repertoire of the shawm bands that flourished in the UK and across Europe in the Middle Ages. Shawms were the staple instruments for all the town waits from the mid 16th to the late 17th centuries and played for all kinds of civic and ceremonial occasions. But the town waits were also expected to play ‘softer’ instruments as well, so Sussex Waits will put the shawms to one side from time to time and play a variety of other instruments including recorders, rebecs, gemshorns and bagpipes. They play on Sunday from 1.00pm-2.00pm at St. Peter's Cottage, and from 3.00pm-4.00pm at Corpus Christi RC church. |
